Hurricane and Named-Storm Deductibles in North Carolina: What Coastal Homeowners Should Know
If you own a home on the North Carolina coast, your wind policy very likely has a named-storm deductible (sometimes called a hurricane or windstorm deductible) that works differently from your everyday deductible. Understanding it before hurricane season can save you from an unwelcome surprise.
A percentage, not a flat dollar amount
Your regular homeowners deductible might be a flat amount. A named-storm deductible is instead calculated as a percentage of your dwelling coverage (Coverage A). Higher percentages are common in coastal areas. Because it is based on your home's insured value, the out-of-pocket amount can be much larger than a standard deductible.
As a simple illustration only: if a policy had a 2 percent deductible and a home was insured for $300,000, the deductible would be $6,000. Your own percentage and dollar amount are printed on your policy declarations page, so that is the number to check.
What triggers the deductible?
This is the part most homeowners miss. A named-storm deductible generally applies to wind or hail loss during a set window that is tied to National Weather Service advisories, watches, or warnings for a named storm. The exact start and end of that window is defined in your policy. Damage outside that window may fall under your lower standard wind deductible instead.
Why coastal deductibles have changed
Storm losses and rising rebuilding costs have made the coastal market tighter in recent years, and named-storm deductibles have trended higher at renewal. If you have not reviewed your wind and hail (Beach Plan) coverage in a while, your deductible structure may have changed since you last looked. Your current figure is printed on your own policy declarations page.
How to plan for it
- Know your number. Read your declarations page so the figure is not a surprise.
- Set aside a reserve if you can, sized to your deductible.
- Consider mitigation. A FORTIFIED roof and other wind-resistant upgrades can help lower your wind premium.
- Remember flood is separate. See our flood coverage overview.
Frequently asked questions
Is a named-storm deductible the same as my regular deductible?
No. Your standard deductible is usually a flat amount for everyday claims. The named-storm deductible is a percentage of your home's insured value and applies only to wind or hail loss during a named-storm window.
Can I choose a lower named-storm deductible?
Sometimes, depending on the carrier and your home. A lower percentage usually means a higher premium. We can compare options across carriers for you.
